Note:
American and Australian recipe books use 'cups' for measuring recipe ingredients.
The American cup has an 8 fl oz (225ml) capacity while the Australian cup is slightly larger at 9 fl oz (250ml).
They are not only used for measuring liquids but also 'dry' ingredients like flour, sugar, butter, etc.
In all measurements the ingredients in the cup should be leveled off at the brim.
If you have an American or Australian recipe you wish to convert here are some of the most common ingredients you are likely to use - others can be measured using a standard British measuring jug.
