Waste Reduction

Waste Not Want Not !!!!

Figures suggest that the average company could save three percent of its annual turnover by bringing in a waste minimisation policy.

While this might take some companies longer than others, in all cases the savings made are a positive contribution to profitability. Nor is the initiative a one off solution. Companies addressing waste minimisation go on to achieve year-on-year savings.

Many aspects of such programmes are simple common sense, and will show an instant, measurable saving

  • Look to segregate waste - this may enhance its resale value and reduce costs of skip disposal.
  • Fit thermostats to radiators in offices.
  • Compressed air accounts for 10 percent of industrial electricity usage and it is estimated that 30 percent of this cost is wasted. A 3mm hole in a compressed air line could be costing you £500 per year.
  • A photocopier left switched on overnight wastes enough energy for around 5,000 A4 copies.
  • Identify waste then explore ways to reuse or recycle it. Disposal should be the last option.

Embarking on a programme of reducing waste makes good business sense, but there are further financial reasons for it.

In the past it has been too easy to forget about waste by burying it. The UK has traditionally had the lowest landfill tax in Europe, but this is set to increase year-on-year forcing companies to examine their practices.

With more legislation coming, and non-compliance likely to attract hefty fines, this could be the ideal time to look again at the business case for waste minimisation.
