Solar Pumping

Introduction to the Project

This particular application arose after it was found that ground water was seeping into a semi-underground plant room during the winter period and after heavy rain. On three occasions the heavy rain had been associated with an electrical storm which had set off power outages. The result was that the mains powered water pump became ineffective causing water levels to rise. Other equipment in the plant room flooded and when electrical power was restored the mains tripped out leaving a flooded plant room. On two occasions plant required overall and on one occasion plant was replaced

Operation

All electricity generated is used to charge the battery. The pump is connected to the battery via the float switch allowing automatic operation as and when required

Economics

Payback for each system is estimated is not calculated. If replacement of any equipment is avoided then payback is in 6 months

Balance-of-System Equipment

Not connected to the electrical distribution system

How the Systems Were Sized

The system was sized using the smallest available mass produced automotive battery, the pump is a bilge pump used in recreational boating. Given these two elements, a PV cell was sized at the rate of a trickle charger. The angle of the PV cell was determined from tables and based on an average over the winter rainy season (37.5 degrees)

What Else Has Been Considered?

No PV system is maintenance-free. Scheduled inspections of the systems will be made to ensure that the wiring and contacts are free from corrosion, the modules are clear of debris, and the mounting equipment has tight fasteners.

Monitoring of the power output of the PV module will be carried out to track the system’s performance to help deter-mine whether the system is operating.
